You ever notice how in the hood \u2014 excuse me, \u201cthe Black community,\u201d because we\u2019re being formal here, don\u2019t want to step on anyone\u2019s fresh Nike dunks \u2014 every business is owned by somebody not<\/em> from the neighborhood? Korean shops, Chinese takeout, the dude who looks like he hacked your Wi-Fi just by blinking at it\u2026 Everybody\u2019s there except<\/em> the people who actually live there. It\u2019s like the whole block is running on a franchise model nobody told us about.And the funniest part? They\u2019ll take our money with a smile, but live there? Oh no. They drive in like they\u2019re on a safari: \u201cLook, children\u2014observe the wild villagers in their natural habitat.\u201d – and why do they have to be wild?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honestly, I can\u2019t blame them. Half of us don\u2019t want to live there either! You ever walk down your own block and get nervous? That\u2019s when you know it\u2019s real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And speaking of preaching\u2026 who invented the phrase \u201cpreaching to the choir\u201d? Have you ever seen a choir at church? They\u2019re behind the pastor. They\u2019re not getting preached to; they\u2019re just staring at the back of his head like:
\u201cIs the sermon almost over? These robes are hot.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If anything, it should be:
\u201cThe pastor preached\u2026 and the choir overheard and overheated.\u201d<\/strong>
Let\u2019s keep it honest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then I Google \u201cchoir\u201d and all I see is a bunch of folks who look like they just got done singing at King Charles\u2019 brunch. But I add \u201cgospel,\u201d suddenly the screen is filled with people who can hit notes that can fix your credit score. Racism is alive, well, and apparently running Google Images. Donald Trump probably has a search filter named after him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another pet peeve: people who play word games like life is a vocabulary exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They ask, \u201cWere you listening?\u201d
\u201cYes.\u201d
\u201cWell, did you hear me?\u201d
\u201cYes.\u201d
\u201cNo, because listening and hearing are different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What?! Man, this is not Scrabble. I\u2019m not trying to impress the judges at the Spelling Bee. I heard you. I listened. I processed the nonsense. Please move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But nothing\u2014nothing<\/em>\u2014irritates me more than false advertising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I went into Trader Joe\u2019s thinking I could, you know\u2026 trade.<\/em> Because that\u2019s the name! \u201cTrader Joe\u2019s!\u201d
I walked in there with some day-old Kroger bread and a box of Lucky Charms like I was on the Oregon Trail. I thought we were about to barter like pioneers. I was feeling bold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I asked the cashier if I could trade my Lucky Charms in, maybe pay the difference. She looked at me like I had just asked for a kidney.
\u201cSir\u2026 we do NOT carry Lucky Charms because that is unhealthy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh, excuse me. I didn\u2019t realize I walked into \u201cWhole Foods Lite.\u201d
Then she tells me the name Trader<\/em> has nothing to do with trading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ma\u2019am\u2026 what?!
So you\u2019re telling me if I go into Burger King, there\u2019s no royalty?
If I go into Dollar Tree, there aren\u2019t any trees?
If I go into Hooters\u2026 well, okay, that one checks out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And after all this, they call security to escort me out like I tried to barter a raccoon for a jar of peanut butter.
So yeah\u2014Trader Joe\u2019s will NOT be getting my business. Or my bread. Or my Lucky Charms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
