It\u2019s been said your plants grow better when you talk to \u2019em. I always wondered if that was true\u2026 or just something Martha Stewart said once while crocheting a poncho in prison. Then I started thinking: What if plants really<\/em> do respond to us?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because that could be great\u2026or it could be Little Shop of Horrors<\/em> levels of terrible.
I don\u2019t need a ficus screaming, \u201cFEED ME SEYMOUR!\u201d every time I walk past it with a Hot Pocket. But let\u2019s take this from the plant\u2019s perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine your owner waters you regularly. Their breath? Fresh. Clean. Like they just spent a whole afternoon in a Listerine commercial with that swoosh sound effect. So pure you\u2019re begging them to never leave. You\u2019re like, \u201cYES, human! Breathe on me like Beyonc\u00e9 opening a concert!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then there\u2019s the other side. The dark timeline. The Zack Snyder cut<\/strong> of plant care. Your owner waters you, sure\u2026but they also have halitosis. <\/em>I mean DEFCON-1, radiation-level breath that makes Godzilla envious. The type of breath that feels like an offensive lineman slap to the face<\/strong> with extra garlic and trauma sprinkled on top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can\u2019t tell them: \u201cCalm down, Karen, go chew on some parsley or mint before breathing your house of dragon breath on me!\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As a plant, you\u2019re thinking: \u201cYes, I\u2019m getting water\u2026 but I\u2019m also being interrogated by the CIA with halitosis waterboarding.\u201d Their breath hits you like an acid shower straight out of Medusa\u2019s morning routine.
This isn\u2019t Clash of the Titans \u2014 this is Clash of the Gingivitis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And people with bad breath? They always enunciate every syllable like they\u2019re auditioning for Shakespearian theater:
\u201cTo. Be. Or. Not. To. Be.\u201d Meanwhile the plant is screaming internally, \u201cTo. Leave. Or. Not. To. Leave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as a plant, you can\u2019t defend yourself. You can\u2019t tell them: \u201cCalm down, Karen, go chew on some parsley or mint before breathing your house of dragon breath on me!\u201d There\u2019s nothing you can do. You just wilt slowly like a TikTok influencer whose account got banned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If plants could talk, they\u2019d say: \u201cLook, just water me and leave me the f%#k alone. Pardon my French, but I literally photosynthesize for a living \u2014 I don\u2019t need your biological warfare on top of it.\u201d And honestly, this is probably where the phrase \u201cI need a breath of fresh air\u201d <\/strong>came from. Some poor houseplant begging for mercy. So, good people: If your plants \u2014 or your pets \u2014 or even your FRIENDS \u2014 start wilting when you\u2019re around\u2026take the hint. If you\u2019re offending photosynthetic organisms, that\u2019s Mother Nature politely prescribing you a big ol\u2019 dose of STFU and LEAVE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A buddy of mine once told me, \u201cWhen life gives you lemons, make vodka.\u201d Great advice. Except he\u2019s dead now and his liver is at the Bodies Exhibit right next to a piece of petrified wood. Inspirational guy. Anyway \u2014 life. Do the best with what you got.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People give too many excuses. If you\u2019re overweight, don\u2019t lean on \u201cI\u2019m big-boned\u201d like it\u2019s a Marvel origin story.
No \u2014 reinvent yourself. Become a food critic. <\/strong>Then when people look, it\u2019s not, \u201cDamn\u2026\u201d It\u2019s, \u201cOoh, what a cultured palate you have!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly the disgust transforms into admiration. People come up like, \u201cHey, what\u2019s the best ramen spot in town?\u201d
Boom. You\u2019re legit. Just don\u2019t ruin it by opening your mouth and talking nonsense \u2014 watch Food Network, learn some terminology, and keep that Gordon Ramsay energy on standby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, other end of the spectrum\u2026If you don\u2019t like eating, people see you walking the beach in a bikini so thin you make a rake look like Fat Albert\u2026 don\u2019t panic. Just tell them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m an actor \u2014 a method actor \u2014 playing a tragic antagonist in a Holocaust period film. I have to lose weight for the authenticity.\u201d People love a politically correct explanation. It hypnotizes \u2019em. It\u2019s like handing out mental pacifiers. Boom \u2014 peace restored. They get to feel enlightened. You get to keep sunbathing without someone trying to hand you a protein shake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you may have noticed I\u2019m throwing around some big<\/em> words. Don\u2019t worry, I didn\u2019t get smarter. I just upgraded from \u201cSpeak & Spell\u201d to \u201cSpeak & Flex.\u201d The word of the day boosted my vocabulary like I installed a DLC expansion pack. But I can\u2019t stand people who use fancy words just to flex intelligence and make you feel like a background character in your own life. Those people? Those \u201clet me elevate myself while stepping on your ego\u201d types?
Yeah \u2014 they deserve a little French. Like a nice \u201cFerme la bouche\u201d with a side of \u201cAllez-vous-en.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So remember: When people laugh at you, talk down to you, or act superior \u2014 flip the script. Keep your head high.
Be proud. And always have a comeback ready. Because if plants can silently judge us\u2026so can we.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
